KARACHI: Chief of Jamiat Ulema e Islam (F), Maulna Fazal ur Rehman on Thursday alleged that there were 35 million bogus voters in the electoral lists and the anomaly has
to be rectified.
Addressing a press conference, following his party’s provincial council meeting, he also proposed urgency for “Independent Election Commission” in the country.
Maulana in reply to a question appreciated that Nadra was playing its role to weed-out the fake voters.
The JUI (F) chief said there was need for consensus among all political parties about any snap elections in the country and that the democracy must not be allowed to derail under any pretext.
“I do not think anything wrong in holding early election and I do foresee polls in 2012,” he said.
Early polls, he reiterated must not be due to disagreement among different institutions in the country nor should it lead to dispute among them.
“We are passing through a crucial phase and cannot allow derailment of democracy,” he insisted.
The JUI (F) chief answering to a question said mistakes were also committed by Nawaz Sharif and no one is perfect.
He said PML (N) as well as JUI (F) had participated in the polls conducted by the government of Gen Pervez Musharraf (retd).
Maulana Fazal ur Rehman in reply to another question said early elections were not against the constitution and that he was keen towards restoration of Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA).
“The major hitch in its restoration is the demand of Jamaat e Islami for 50% seats in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa while JUI feels that there has to be a formula for distribution of seats,” he elaborated.
Responding to a query, he said PML (N) chief Mian Nawaz Sharif has also been approached by him and his response is still awaited.
He said elections if held this year must be supervised by an interim set-up acceptable to all political parties.
On the occasion provincial chief of JUI (F) Dr. Khalid Mahmood Soomro informed the journalists that the party would hold a public meeting in Karachi on January 27.
He claimed that this would be the largest congregation ever witnessed in Karachi and would be attended by party workers and supporters from all parts of Sindh. (KMW News)
