Srinagar,January 17 (KMW): Joint resistance leadership (JRL) comprising of Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Muhammad Umer Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik Wednesday called complete shutdown in civil lines area to commemorate the Gaw-Kadal massacre on 21st January. They called for shutdown in Handwara town on 25th January and in Kupwara town on 27th January. The leaders also said that a public rally will be held at Gaw-kadal.
“Carnage at Gaw-Kadal, Handwara and Kupwara remind us of Indian brutal occupation and oppression,” JRL said in a statement.
Terming the massacres at Gaw-Kadal, Handwara and Kupwara in 1990 as a reminder of “Indian illegal occupation and oppression”, joint resistance leaders said “Indian military occupation started its killing machine from Gaw-Kadal when on 21st January 1990; its forces opened their guns on peaceful protesters and callously murdered more than 50 innocents within an hour.”
“This massacre was followed by massacres at Handwara and Kupwara where hundreds of Kashmiris were gunned down by Indian police and forces with impunity,” the JRL said.
