Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly today passed a resolution unanimously condemning the anti-Islam movie made in the United States, which has sparked protests across the world.
A one-line resolution was moved by Speaker Mohammad Akbar Lone shortly before the House was adjourned for the day when an Independent member Sheikh Abdul Rashid, supported by other members, demanded that the House condemn the anti-Islam movie.
Mr Rashid, speaking on obituary references for Speaker Malik Mohiuddin and Sardar Piara Singh, said, “the film had hurt the religious sentiments of Muslims around the world.” Suppporting the demand, several members, including from Bharatiya Janata Party and Communist Party of India (M) demanded that a one-line resolution be passed against the film and its maker.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, speaking on the references, said, “this House is paying tributes to departed leaders and it could be taken up later.” However, he strongly condemned the film.
Later, CPI(M) lone member Mohammad Yousuf Targami requested the Chair to move a one-line resolution so that it could be passed today itself.
The Speaker moved the resolution that this House strongly condemned the anti-Islam movie which was later passed unanimously.
Mr Lone later adjourned the House to meet again on October 3.
