Curfew in parts of Central Kashmir after clash leaves one dead

Srinagar: Curfew has been imposed in some parts of the central Kashmir district of Ganderbal, where a youth was killed in a clash between two groups, yesterday.

Official sources said that a 22-year-old Shabir Ahmad Bhat was killed and three others were injured when two groups of people clashed over the use of loud speaker in a mosque at Sendbal, about five km from Ganderbal.

The trouble started when two rival groups of people had a verbal argument which was followed by use of lathis and stones on each other.

Immediately after the death of the youth, who had gone to mosque to offer prayers, people took to streets, demanding action against those involved in the incident.

Later, reinforcement was rushed to the Sendbal and other adjoning areas besides patrolling had been intensified in the Ganderbal town.

Sensing more trouble, authorities announced the imposition of the curfew, asking people to remain indoor.

The situation is still tense by under control, mainly due to imposition of the curfew, they said adding efforts are being made to bring senior citizens from both the groups to sort out the differences.
