ANC for declaration of assets by politicians

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Awami National Conference has welcomed the suggestion by a Jammu-based newspaper to the present day politicians to make a public declaration of their moveable and immoveable assets in keeping with true democratic norms.
“Regardless of any consideration and without any inhibition, former and incumbent leaders of the Awami National Conference holding various positions have, about a year ago, got the details of their assets published in newspapers,” ANC spokesman, Anees Qureshi, said in a statement here on Tuesday.
Confirming this, the Jammu-based newspaper has asked the Jammu and Kashmir chief minister, Omar Abdullah, to follow the footsteps of his nephew and senior vice-president of ANC, Muzaffar Shah, who has made public all the details of assets of party’s founder-president, late Khwaja Ghulam Muhammad Shah, the ANC president, Begum Khalidah Shah, and his own assets.
The spokesman said Muzaffar Shah had all along been stressing the imperatives of honesty and integrity among political leaders, particularly because war against corruption and malpractices could not be won merely by means of political gimmickry and emotive speeches. He said people were fully knowledgeable now and kept a close eye on their rulers, their public life and their conduct.
“Interestingly, reflecting his helplessness to discharge his mandatory obligations, the chief minister has recently admitted that eradication of corruption was impossible in a coalition dispensation. Not only does it indicate the chief minister’s abject surrender to coalition compulsions, but points to the growing differences within the ruling combine as well,” the ANC spokesman said.
