Srinagar: Terming Chief Minister Omar Abdullah an “opportunistic politician,” the Syed Ali Shah Geelani-led Hurriyat Conference Friday said it was surprised by reports of successive Jammu and Kashmir governments not having made any recommendation or request to New Delhi for revocation of the controversial Armed Forces Special Powers Act
“Like his predecessors Omar Abdullah too has turned out to be an opportunistic politician. His hue and cry over AFSPA is nothing but vote bank politics,” the amalgam said in a statement issued here.
“Although the principle demand of Kashmiris is the end to Indian occupation of Jammu and Kashmir, laws like AFSPA, which are offshoots of this forcible occupation, give the Indian troops in Kashmir a license to kill innocent civilians. Therefore, the revelation that no recommendation was made by the State government to New Delhi for revocation or withdrawal of this draconian law has exposed the lies of all pro-India politicians , including Omar Abdullah,” the statement said.
The amalgam alleged that Omar Abdullah was issuing statements on ASFPA as part of “an understanding with New Delhi.”
“Delhi has allowed Omar Abdullah to speak as much as he wants on AFSPA so that he can widen his vote bank, but forbidden him from taking any administrative steps for revocation of such black laws. Otherwise, had he been sincere, Omar Abdullah, instead of raising hue and cry over the issue would have used the powers under the J&K Constitution to take some concrete steps in this regard,” it said
“The revelations made by Indian Home Ministry show that despite their sweet-talk about being well-wishers of Kashmiris, Mufti Sayeed and Ghulam Nabi Azad also took no steps for the revocation of AFSPA because they are only bothered about power.” (KMW News)
