Srinagar, Jan 21: Gawkadal and its adjoining areas observed a strict shutdown today in rememberance of the Gawkadal martyrs. On January 21, 1990, troopers of the paramilitary BSF fired indiscriminately on a protest killing 52 and injuring more than 250 civilians, many of whom were disabled for life. Gawkadal Massacre is also alluded to as the Jalianwalla Bagh of Kashmir.

Earlier, People’s Political Party (PPP) Chairman, Engineer Hilal War would give a shutdown call every year as the party cadre would peacefully march through the area.
