Srinagar: The Kashmir valley was cut off from the rest of the country after 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway was closed due to snowfall and heavy rains since last evening.
A number of roads to far flung and remote areas, including areas near the Line of Control besides Mughal road in Pirpanchal range had also been closed.
It was still snowing and raining, hampering the snow clearance operations to put through these roads.
Official sources said that traffic on Srinagar-Jammu national highway was closed last evening following heavy snowfall and rain at several places.
Hundreds of vehicles, including those carrying passengers, which left Srinagar and Jammu in the afternoon yesterday, are stranded at several places on the highway.
Correspondent reported from Jawahar tunnel, connecting the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, that there was more than one and half a feet snow accumulated on the road.
It was still snowing; he said adding that the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) responsible for the maintenance of the highway has pressed into service sophisticated machines and men to put through the highway as early as possible.
Official sources said that no vehicle was allowed from Jammu or Srinagar this morning.
However, only stranded vehicles would be allowed to move towards their respective destinations once a green signal is received from the BRO and traffic police personnel deployed at different places on the highway.Â
