Srinagar: The state government on Saturday ordered a magisterial probe into the death of a detainee from Kupwara jail who died in SK Institute of Medical Sciences here few hours after he was referred by jail authorities on Thursday last.

“Additional District Magistrate, Kupwara has been appointed as Inquiry Officer to inquest into the circumstances of the death of Sajad Ahmad Dar son of Ghulam Nabi Dar of Sangrampora Sopore, Baramulla,” District Magistrate, Kupwara, Mohammad Shafi Rather said.
The deceased, he said, was lodged in District Jail Kupwara under PSA and reportedly died at SKIMS Srinagar after being referred from District Jail Kupwara for treatment during intervening night of March 21 and 22.
“The Additional District Magistrate has been asked to submit his report into the matter within fifteen days,” he added.
Tariq Ahmad Dar, brother of the deceased, alleged that jail authorities had denied him requisite medical aid since his lodgement. “His health continuously deteriorated as jail staff did not pay any heed to our pleas of shifting him to hospital for the treatment. His condition worsened with every passing day, eventually leading to his death,” Tariq Ahmad had said. The family had demanded government to investigate the matter thoroughly to fix responsibility of his death. (KMW NEWS)
