Killers of Gawkadal Martyrs be Punished: PPP Chief
Srinagar,21 Jan: The J & K People’s Political Party (PPP) Chairman, Hilal Ahmad War had given a strike call in the Heart of the Srinagar City. The strike call given against the Gawkadal Massacre which took place on January 21, 1990. On the day 52 unarmed people were killed and about 250 sustained bullet injuries. PPP Chief took out a procession in which hundreds of ppp supports took part in historical Maisuma Bazar. They were protesting against massacre and were Carrying banners reading as, “Punish the Killers of Gawkadal Massacreâ€, “Give Me Liberty or Give Me Deathâ€. The youngsters were Chanting slogans in favour of (Azaadi) Freedom of Kashmir and against military occupation of India.
Mr. War while addressing a huge gathering in his hometown Maisuma, said, “The Gawkadal massacre is perhaps the first massacre in the history in which signals of massacre were given well before conducting the massacre. On the January 20, 1990 Jagmohan’s first television address as governor of J & K State stunned everyone. It was clear cut provocative address and a direct threat in which Jagmohan said if anybody creates a law and order problem, Meray Haathon say Aman ka patta Khisak jaye ga (the cards of peace I’m carrying will slip away from my hands). And in less than 24-hours the threat was carried out in a brutal mannerâ€.
While paying the homage to Gawkadal Martyrs in the rally, Mr. War said, “The Gawkadal Massacre was a well thought plan of the then Home Ministry of India which was aimed at to pave the way for Kashmiri Pandit’s exodus from Kashmirâ€. It is pertinent to mention here that the conspiracy of Kashmiri Pandits exodus was hatched by the then Governor of J & K, Mr. Jagmohan in collaboration with Home Ministry of India. The Home Ministry of India was then headed by PDP Chief Patron, Mufti Muhammad Sayed who claims to be the well wisher of oppressed Kashmiris.
PPP Chief urges International Human Rights Organizations to set-up an International Independent Tribunal to probe the Gawkadal Massacre so that the conspirators be unmasked and punished under International Humanitarian Law.
Mr. War further said that If Mr. Omar Abdullah is sincere about his much talked about ‘ Truth and Reconciliation Commission’ he has golden opportunity to start the Truth and Reconciliation Commission by punishing the killers and conspirators of Gawkadal Massacre including the then Home Minister of India .
While leading the rally towards Budshah Chowk in which youth were chanting slogans just for Azaadi (Freedom) .A heavy contingent of Police and CRPF was deployed to stop the march of PPP Chairman. The Police and CRPF used force to stop the march near Budshah Chowk . The Police used brute force and used lath charge against women folk in which War’s eldest Sister in Law was critically injured and she was taken to SKIMS Hospital for the treatment.
Shops and business establishments in the Civil Lines areas of summer capital of Srinagar, Lal Chowk, Budshah Chowk, Maisuma Bazar, Gawkadal, Kukarbazar, Saraibala, Gonokhan, maharaja Bazar, Exchange Road, Red Cross Road, remained closed and traffic was off the roads. However, some private vehicles could be seen plying on some uptown and civil line routes. (KMW News)
