London, July 8 Rafael Nadal has withdrawn from Wimbledon semifinal clash against Nick Kyrgios due to abdominal injury.
With this, Kyrgios will go through to the final by default and would either face Novak Djocovic or C Norrie on Sunday.
“It does not make sense for me to play. It is very sad to report this,” Nadal said.
“It is not easy to leave Wimbledon. I have to respect myself and not play if I am at my level. I cannot risk more and expose myself to stay three or four months out of the competition,” he continued.
In the quarterfinal against Taylor Fritz , when he suffered the injury, his father and sister in the gallery gestured to him to concede the match, but the Spainiard went on and won the match. However, he does not see himself for a full-time battle against Kyrgios in a semifinal clash.
He said, “I cannot see myself winning two matches like that. I cannot make the normal move to serve. But I have always said the most important thing is happiness and health. It saddens me. I did not want to give up in the middle of a match. I found a way to finish it, but I have made the decision now thinking about my future.”
This was for the fourth time that Nadal has withdrawn at a Grand Slam since 2005.
Nadal withdrew in 2016 at Roland Garros with a left wrist injury and in 2018, first in Australia with an injury to the psoas iliacus in his right leg and then at the US Open with right knee problems.
He stated that he will be out for three or four weeks.
