New Delhi, June 6 Communist Party of India (Marxist) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury on Monday slammed the ruling BJP over objectionable remarks against a community and said the Narendra Modi-led government at the Centre should uphold the secular democratic foundations of India.
The statement of the senior CPI(M) leader comes a day after Nupur Sharma and Naveen Jindal were suspended and terminated from the saffron party for their respective objectionable remarks, following a barrage of condemnation from various quarters within and outside the country.
“BJP leaders discharging official party responsibilities cannot be ‘fringe elements’. The Modi government functioning under oath of the Indian Constitution must put an end to such religious bigotry and uphold the secular democratic foundations of India,” Yechury wrote on twitter.
On Sunday, BJP’s Delhi unit president Adesh Gupta, in his statement while sacking Jindal, said his opinion was contrary to the party’s original ideology.
The BJP suspended Nupur Sharma for allegedly making controversial remarks against Prophet Muhammad.
