Srinagar: Mobiles services were suspended today in the Kashmir valley for security reasons on 66th Independence Day (ID), being celebrated throughout the country.
Mobile service providers, including Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) suspended the service at 0800 hrs for about an hour before the start of the ID main function at Bakshi Stadium.
Mediapersons, particularly those in the field to cover the function had a very tough time as they could not contact their offices because of non functional mobile services.
Official sources said in the past, militants triggered Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) through mobile phones, targeting security forces in the valley.
To foil any such militant attack, the authorities had directed the mobile service providers to switch off the service till the main function was over and all VIPs reach their respective destinations.
However, the landlines and internet service were working normally.
