Srinagar, Nov 15: Moderate Hurriyat Conference Chairman Mirwaiz Moulvi Omar Farooq and about a dozen other leaders were put under house arrest or taken into preventive custody to foil dharna near United Nations Military Observers Group (UNMOG) office in Srinagar this afternoon.
Mirwiaz gave a call for protest near the UNMOG against the recent killing of youths in alleged security force firing in the Valley.
Meanwhile, hurriyat spokesman has sternly condemned the house arrest of APHC Chairman Mirwaiz Molvi Umar Farooq and several hurriyat leaders including Moulana Abbas Ansari, Agha Syed Hassan Al Moosvi, Mukhtar Ahmad Waza, Advocate Shahid-ul-Islam, Syed Salim Geelani and arrest of Engineer Hilal Ahmad War and Hakim Abdul Rashid in police stations.
Condemning the killing of Tariq Ahmed Bhat in Chenigam, Kulgam, by security forces, Mr Farooq said in less than two weeks they have witnessed the brutal killing of three youths by the security forces.
Bhat was killed yesterday after security forces allegedly opened fire to disperse demonstrators at Chanigam, where two Lashker-e-Toiba (LeT) militants were killed in an encounter.
He alleged that the armed forces operating in a climate of impunity have become reckless and are on a killing spree, while they remain helpless.
“Repeatedly, the state forces get away with these acts while the authorities announce customary investigations which are an eye wash,” he alleged and regretted the complete apathy of the Indian civil society and the International community towards these recurrent killings of innocent civilians.
The Mirwaiz said, “All means of protest are barred for pro freedom leadership and we are not even allowed to express our outrage at these heinous acts.”
He said, “We will once again attempt to get our voice heard and said amalgam leaders and activisits will assemble at UNMOG at Sonawar at 1400 hrs today and have a sit in protest to bring into focus these killings and to demand from the international community to take cognisance of these killings and pressurize India to put an end to these acts which have become the order of the day.”
