Militants strike again, 2 Cops killed, Girl injured

Srinagar, (KMW News): Two policemen were killed and a girl injured after militants fired upon a police party near Hari Singh High Street here this afternoon.

Eye witnesses said two militants on a motorbike fired on a police party resulting in injuries to two cops and a girl. The slain cops have been identified as Head Constable Muhammad Maqbool belt No 971/S of Gundipora, Pinglana Pulwama and Constable Nazir Ahmad belt No 1405/S of Kulgam.
The injured girl has been identified as Ishrat daughter of Ghulam Rasool of Ganderbal. However, her condition is stated to be out of danger.
The injured were immediately rushed to Shere Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences here for treatment. Head Constable Muhammad Maqbool succumbed to injuries on way to hospital while as Constable Nazir Ahmad died after being operated by doctors in SKIMS Soura here.
Official sources identified the injured girl as Ishrat daughter of Ghulam Rasool of Ganderbal. However, her condition is stated to be out of danger.
The shootout created panic in the area and people were seen taking shelter in lanes and by lanes while shop keepers and hawkers fled from the area leaving their shops open. Senior Police officers visited the area to take on the spot stock of situation.
The attack came just three days ahead of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to Valley.
Soon after the attack, SOG, Police and CRPF cordoned off the area and started search operation when reports last came.
It is pertinent to mention here that on Friday, Police carried out a crackdown in the Srinagar City’s commercial hub Lal Chowk and its adjoining areas following intelligence inputs that militants might try to strike in the city centre. However, no arrests or recoveries were made on that occasion.
Meanwhile, a wreath laying ceremony for the two martyrs was held at DPL, Srinagar. The wreath laying ceremony was attended by Advisor to Chief Minister, Qamar Ali Akhoon,deputed by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Minister of State for Animal Husbandry Nazir Ahmad Khan Gurezi, D G Police , Ashok Prasad, ADGs,IGs, DIGs,SPs of different wings of Police, Civil , security forces officers and jurisdictional police officers of Srinagar police.
