Srinagar: The Kashmir valley was cut off from the rest of the country this morning after the 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway was closed due to landslides, triggered by heavy rains since last night.
The 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh national highway was through for traffic despite heavy rains.
A traffic police official said here today that heavy rains triggered landslides and shooting stones between Batri Cheshma and Ramban on the highway, the only road linking the valley with the rest of the country.
He said the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintainance of the highway, have put into service sophisticated machines and men to work to put through the highway.
However, continued rain have hampered the clearance work as there was still threat of landslides and shooting stones, he said adding the traffic will be resumed only after receiving green signal from the authorities on the highway.
Oficial sources said hundreds of vehicles, including those carrying passengers, were stranded at different places on the highway.
Trucks carrying essentials for the valley are also stranded on the highway, sources said.
