Srinagar: Normal life was disturbed Tuesday due to the strike called by Syed Ali Shah Geelani led Hurriyat Conference against the shifting of detainees from Srinagar to Jammu and other outside jails.

Reports said that shops and other business establishments remained closed in this summer capital while most of the public transport was off the road. The authorities had deployed paramilitary CRP and police at sensitive places to prevent any clashes, they said.
The call for the strike was given by Syed Ali Shah Geelani against the shifting of detainees to jails outside the Valley.
“The shifting of more than 50 political prisoners from Srinagar Central Jail to Kathua , HiraNagar and Kotbalwal jails in Jammu is nothing but an act of political vendetta , having no legal or moral justification. The government wants to keep the political prisoners far from their families and subject them to mental and physical torture,” the octogenarian leader had said.
“The move is also against Indian constitution as, according to a ruling by Indian Supreme Court, detainees should be lodged close to their homes so that their families and relatives can easily meet them without much wastage of time. But such decisions are taken by Indian Home Ministry and IB officials with the sole purpose of pestering the people of Kashmir,” Geelani had added.
The reports about strike were also received from other district headquarters including Baramulla, Bandipora, Kupwara in north Kashmir and Ganderbal and Budgam districts in central Kashmir. Reports of shutdown also poured in from southern Kashmir’s Pulwama, Shopian, Kulgam and Anantnag districts. (KMW News)
