Kashmir erupts after Friday prayers

Srinagar, Apr 21: Security forces today teargassed protestors after Friday prayers at various places in Kashmir Valley, where demonstrations by students have increased against the alleged use of disproportionate force by security forces on them in different educational institutes since April 15.

Trouble started after Friday prayers in historic Jamia Masjid, where hundreds of protestors took to the streets outside the mosque.

Authorities barred MIrwaiz Umar Farooq, Syed Ali Geelani and other separatist leaders from offering Friday prayers.

Shouting slogans, they tried to march towards main Nowhatta chowk.

Security forces prevented the demonstrators from moving ahead.
As they did not back off, the security forces burst teargas shells to disperse them, as they regrouped and pelted stones.

Earlier, a peaceful protest was staged by Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front activists in Maisuma. Protesters carrying placards and banners seeking stoppage of assault on students, halt to civilian killings and immediate resolution to Kashmir issue appealed international community to take note of the human rights violations taking place in Kashmir Valley.
