Srinagar: The authorities on Saturday closed the 300-km Srinagar-Jammu highway due to snowfall and rains rendering the highway unsafe for vehicular traffic.
Official sources told that the 300-km highway, the only surface link connecting Valley with the rest of the world was closed this morning following snowfall and rains around Jawahar Tunnel, Ramban and other areas since last evening. However, hundreds of vehicles stranded along the highway were cleared by the officials after the beacon authorities made the vital road link motorable.
“The highway was closed this morning as a precautionary measure. The stranded vehicles at many places were allowed to proceed towards their respective destinations,†Senior Superintendent of police (SSP) highways (Urban) G M Wadoo told .
He said no vehicles were allowed to ply on the highway by the officials. Wadoo said that the traffic will be allowed to ply on the road if the weather conditions improve.
