India to ratify UN Convention against Corruption soon

New Delhi: Facing criticism from various quarters, India, which had signed the UN Convention Against Corruption in 2005, may finally ratify it.
The issue has acquired greater urgency and importance in the wake of the series of scams that had come to light recently, and reports of the ill-gotten wealth safely parked in foreign banks.
“The ratification process was currently underway and was likely to be completed soon,” Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Vishnu Prakash said here today.
India is only one of the few countries that have not ratified the Convention.
The MEA has been pushing the government to ratify it, but so far the Government had not shown any activeness to do so.
Legal experts say that had India signed the convention, it would have been easy for it to bring back the massive amount of black money parked in foreign banks.
Article 51 of the UN Convention provides for the return of assets to countries of origin as its fundamental principle.
