IAS officer suspended after custodial remand for sexual harassment

Ranchi, July 8 The Jharkhand Government on Friday suspended jailed IAS officer Sayed Riyaz Ahmed who is currently lodged in Khunti jail on judicial custody for allegedly sexually harassing a student belonging to IIT Mandi.

Chief Minister Hemant Soren ordered the IAS officer’s suspension when the matter was brought to his notice .
After being arrested in the case, the officer was produced before a court which sent him to judicial custody.
As per the FIR registered by the victim, a group of 16 students from IIT Mandi had come for internship at an NGO based in Khunti. The students included eight girls.
On July 1, the IAS officer, who was posted as SDM Khunti, threw a party at his house in which the students also participated.
The party continued late into the night during which the officer forcibly kissed the girl and tried to take her to his room but somehow she managed to get away from the spot.
On July 4, the victim registered her complaint at the women police station in Khunti. Post the complaint, the police questioned the other students after which the IAS officer was arrested
Riyaz Ahmed is an IAS officer of the 2019 batch and had been appointed as Khunti SDM last year.
He originally hails from Nagpur in Maharashtra, and his wife is also an IAS officer. currently posted elsewhere.
Police said Riyaz has been arrested under sections 354 (assaulting or using criminal force to outrage the modesty of a woman), 354 A (sexual harassment) and 509 (words, gestures or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code.
