Highway to Ladakh, several roads to far flung areas closed

Srinagar: Highway to Ladakh region and several other roads to far flung and remote areas, including Line of Control (LoC) were closed due to moderate to heavy snowfall since last evening.

In view of forecast for fresh snowfall in higher reaches of the Kashmir Valley, the authorities closed roads to far flung and remote areas besides the National Highway connecting Ladakh region with the rest of the state today following forecast for fresh snowfall by Met department.

Official sources said that Meenamarg, Drass, Zojila and Sonamarg on Srinagar-Leh national highway received moderate to heavy snowfall.

However, there is no vehicle stranded on the highway because of prior measures taken by the authorities, suspending traffic today.

Minister for Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (CA&PD) and transport Qamar Ali Akhoon travelled to Kargil from here by road yesterday.

Heavy snowfall was recorded on Sadhna and Razdan tops, connection almost all far flung and remote areaas near the Line of Control (LoC) in north Kashmir.

Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Dr Asgar Hassan Samoon had ordered traffic restrictions on movement of vehicles on Kargil- Zanskar, Srinagar-Zojila-Kargil, Kupwara-Machil and Tangdhar, Anantnag-Sinthan-Kishtwar, Bandipora-Gurez roads and Shopian-Mughal road as a precautionary measure for today.

This is the third time these roads were closed as a precautionary measure in view of snow prediction during the past two weeks.

People were appealed to defer their travel progamme to these areas, in their own interest.

The present Western Disturbance, originating in Arabian sea and enter the region through Afghanistan and Pakistan are likely to intensify till this evening.

Due to this weather system, moderate snowfall over hills and rains in plains will occur at many places of Pirpanjal ranges in Kashmir division and at a few places over Ladakh and higher reaches of Jammu region.

Some places of Pirpanjal range may receive 35 cms and above snowfall, a Met department spokesman said here.

This system is likely to disrupt surface and air transport systems of the state today.

The weather will witness improvement from tomorrow, he said.
