Guwahati, Jan 03: Lakshman Prasad Acharya, Governor of Assam, Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister of Railways, Information & Broadcasting and Electronics & Information Technology along with Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, Chief Minister of Assam, today jointly inaugurated the National Institute of Electronics & Information Technology (NIELIT) Deemed to be University at 12 locations including 5 locations in North Eastern States. NIELIT Deemed to be University, the only university under the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY), was dedicated to the nation during an event held in Guwahati.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was also signed between NIELIT and Tata Electronics Private Limited (TEPL) to collaboratively enhance the semiconductor skilling ecosystem in India. The MoU was signed by Dr. M. M. Tripathi, Director General, NIELIT and Dr. Randhir Thakur, CEO & MD, Tata Electronics Private Limited (TEPL). The partnership aims to establish skill centers, develop diploma and certification programs, and conduct workshops in Semiconductor ATMP (Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packaging) technologies. TSAT will offer technical expertise and internship opportunities, while NIELIT will focus on education, training, and outreach. Both organisations will also jointly pursue research and funding initiatives, with a special emphasis on creating opportunities in the Northeastern region of India.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw during the event emphasized on the government’s commitment to transforming India into a leading hub for Semiconductor Manufacturing, Artificial Intelligence, Cyber Security, and Industry 4.0. In line with the vision of the Prime Minister, this initiative aims to prepare a skilled workforce that meets the evolving demands of the industry. This university is set to play a crucial role in equipping students with the necessary skills to thrive in a rapidly changing technological environment. He added that now the meaning of North East is “New Engine”, to lead the development and growth of the country.

The Minister announced the launch of NIELIT University, highlighting that it is inspired by the vision of Hon’ble Prime Minister to prepare professionals in cutting-edge fields such as Semiconductor Manufacturing, Artificial Intelligence, Industry 4.0, and Quantum Computing.  

Ashwini Vaishnaw informed that the new campus of NIELIT will be developed in Jagiroad near Gauwahati which will focus on semiconductor manufacturing and electronics manufacturing.

Hon’ble Chief Minister of Assam, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma reiterated the Prime Minister’s vision of a future where the entire world will rely on semiconductor chips that are “Made in India” and “Made in Assam.” He emphasized the significant potential for the semiconductor industry to thrive in the region, highlighting the necessity for a skilled workforce and trained manpower to support this growing sector. This underscored the commitment to fostering local talent and creating job opportunities, ensuring that Assam plays a pivotal role in the global technology landscape.

Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the Assam Government has swiftly approved the land allocation for National Institute of Electronics & Information Technology (NIELIT) University at Jagiroad in a record time of just one day. This was possible due to the vision and leadership of the Prime Minister and Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw.

Lakshman Prasad Acharya, Hon’ble Governor of Assam said that the launch of NIELIT Deemed to be University is the historical moment. The university will provide higher education in digital Technologies like Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Blockchain Technology, Industry 4.0, Semiconductor Design & Manufacturing, Automotive Electronics, Drone Technology, Cybersecurity & Forensics, Bioinformatics and many more.

Later in the day, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw visited the Tata Semiconductor plant at Jagiroad to review the progress of the manufacturing facility.

About NEILIT

The National Institute of Electronics & Information Technology (NIELIT), an Autonomous Scientific Society under MeitY, has been conferred the status of “Deemed to Be University” under the distinct category by the Ministry of Education. With its main campus at Ropar (Punjab) and eleven constituent units located in Aizawl, Agartala, Aurangabad, Calicut, Gorakhpur, Imphal, Itanagar, Kekri, Kohima, Patna, and Srinagar, NIELIT Deemed to Be University aims to revolutionize higher education in digital technologies.
