Srinagar: Life was today affected due to general strike, called by Hurriyat Chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Senior Pro-freedom leader and World Islamic Students League Chairman, Jameel Ahmad War on the maiden visit of President Pranab Mukherjee to Kashmir valley.
Shops and business establishments remained closed due to strike, a second during the past one week.
On September 21, general strike was observed in protest against the anti-Islam movie made in the US.
Educational institutions remained closed while work in government offices, banks and other public sector undertaking was affected.
Traffic was also off the roads, providing much needed relief to traffic police personnel, who otherwise remained busy to ensure free traffic movement on city routes. Private vehicles and some passenger vehicles were playing on some routes in the city.
Additional security force and state police personnel remained deployed on the roads to maintain vigil.
Business and other activities remained shut in this and other south Kashmir towns and tehsil headquarters, a report from Anantnag said.
Streets wore almost deserted look as traffic remained off the roads. Work in offices and a financial institution was also affected due to strike.
A report from Baramulla said life was crippled as all shops and business establishments remained closed and traffic was off the roads in this and other north Kashmir towns and tehshil headquarters.
Educational institutions remained closed and work in banks and offices was affected.
Similar reports were also received from other parts of the valley.
