SRINAGAR: Development Commissioner Power M.A. Salroo in a statement issued here today has said that consequent to a high level meeting chaired by the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on 29th December, 2011 to review the status of essential supplies including that of power supply in the state particularly the Kashmir valley during the winter season and on the directions of the Chief Minister, the Power Development Department has ensured that energy supply to Kashmir valley is significantly increased to give immediate relief to the common man from severe winter conditions prevailing in the valley.
He said earlier, on an average 850 MW electricity was being supplied to Kashmir valley and now electricity supply level has gone upto 951 MW and the effort of the Power Development Department would be to increase it further to 1100 MW level in coming days.
The Development Commissioner Power said last year, during the month of December (2010-2011) nearly 5300 lac units of electricity was supplied against which this year in the month of December 5809 lac units have been supplied accounting for an additional supply of 10% over the last year during the month of December.
The Power Development Department has also been directed to put into operation gas turbines immediately to give further relief to the people, he said.
The Development Commissioner Power has further requested the people to minimize the consumption of electricity as per agreemented load to avoid over-heating and consequent burning of the distribution transformers which may lead to avoidable inconvenience to the people.
He said keeping in view the fact that this year nearly 10% more electricity is being supplied to the valley and the Power Development Department has been directed to ensure that no un-scheduled power cuts are resorted to and schedule of curtailment is strictly adhered to minimize inconvenience to the people.
