The entry of heroin addiction has severed the menace of drug addiction  in Kashmir. Facts and statistics aptly reflect worry.

The study done by the Psychiatry department of Government Medical College (GMC), Srinagar reveals that Kashmir is currently at the number two position among the top drug abuser states in the country with Northeast topping the list.

It states that the overall prevalence of substance abuse has reached 2.87 with the deadly Heroin becoming the most commonly used drug by addicts. The substance abuse is predominant in young males with a mean age of 28.15 years.

Experts closely watching the menace of drug abuse phenomenon in Jammu and Kashmir are pointing out that we are seeing Injection Heroin as the main substance user, previously we used to see painkillers and Cannabis users. This is going to prove deadly for our youth .

Sanity pulse is worried that the alarming fact, however, is that 95 per cent of these drug abusers are addicts of deadly heroin, which has spread its tentacles deep into Kashmiri society over the last five years.

In the realm of rehabilitation, the government’s efforts to set up drug rehabilitation facilities move slowly. There is an urgent need for new drug rehabilitation facilities with up-to-date equipment and enough staff to achieve the desired results while also satisfying the goal of rehabilitation.

Although, the sane voices are concerned why drug menace is severing in Jammu and Kashmir especially Kashmir valley. The youth of Kashmir no doubt are worst hit by the menace of drug addiction.
