SRINAGAR, JANUARY 15: With an aim to provide essential information to jail inmates about the UTRC and to highlight the rights of undertrial prisoners and convicts, the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Srinagar Wednesday organized an impactful awareness programme on the Under Trial Review Committee (UTRC) at Central Jail Srinagar.

The initiative was conducted under the directions of Amit Kumar Gupta, Member Secretary, J&K Legal Services Authority, and under the supervision of Nusrat Ali Hakak, Secretary, DLSA Srinagar/Budgam.

The programme saw the active participation of Para Legal Volunteers (PLVs) of the Prison Legal Aid Clinic, who served as resource persons for the session.

During the programme, the PLVs educated the inmates about the UTRC’s mandate, which includes reviewing the cases of undertrial prisoners to ensure their rights are protected and that they are not unnecessarily detained. The session also focused on creating awareness about the legal remedies available to the inmates, the importance of speedy trials, and the rights guaranteed to them under the Indian Constitution and criminal justice system.

The interactive session witnessed a positive response from the inmates, who engaged in discussions with the nominated resource persons and sought clarifications on various legal matters. The initiative underlined the commitment of the District Legal Services Authority to uphold the rights of individuals within the justice system and ensure their access to legal aid and awareness.

DLSA Srinagar continues its efforts in promoting legal literacy and addressing the challenges faced by inmates in the justice delivery system. Such initiatives are a testament to the collaborative efforts of the legal services authorities in fostering a fair and equitable justice system.
