DHEW organizes workshop on domestic violence in Kargil

Kargil, Nov 18: District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW) Mission Shakti, Department of Social and Tribal Welfare, Kargil in collaboration with District Legal Service Authority (DLSA) Kargil today organized a workshop on domestic violence at Conference Hall Baroo, Kargil. 

The workshop was aimed to raise awareness about legal rights and support systems for women. The workshop was attended by Child Development Project Officer (CDPO), ICDS Kargil, Parveen Akhtar, SHO Women Police Station Kargil, Yangzom, panel lawyers (DLSA) Kargil Advocate Zarina Banoo and Advocate Kaneez Fatima, gender specialist DHEW, Aamina Banoo, Social Workers from Special Cell for Women Kargil Haseena Batool and Khadim Hussain, members of Zainabia Women Welfare Society (Women Wing) of IKMT, members of Haiyat-e-Fatimia (Women Wing) JUIAK, members of rZamba trust and others.

Parveen Akhtar expressed gratitude to all the participants for their participation in the workshop. She emphasized the importance of awareness on the issue and hoped that the workshop would be beneficial and enlightening for all participants. 

SHO Women Police Station Kargil emphasized on role of parents in upbringing of children and them to maintain a friendly relationship with their children. 

Advocate Zarina Banoo, who was a Resource Person, outlined the concept of domestic violence in her welcome speech. She elaborated on various laws and acts addressing the issue, highlighting legal protections and emphasizing the importance of awareness in combating domestic violence.

She highlighted laws protecting rights of women with special emphasis on Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act-2005, stressing its importance in safeguarding women against abuse. She outlined the duties and roles of protection officers and service providers, as mandated by law, in handling domestic violence cases. She also emphasized the importance of raising awareness among women about legal mechanisms and procedures to pursue in cases of rights violations.

Resource Person Aamina Banoo delivered a detailed presentation on domestic violence, discussing its various types and emphasizing the need to recognize and address the different forms of abuse faced by victims.

She highlighted reasons for the high incidence of domestic violence, citing factors such as patriarchal attitudes, dowry system, gender inequality and lack of awareness.

She briefed about the role of One Stop Centre for Women like legal assistance, medical assistance, police assistance, counselling etc. to support victims of domestic violence and abuse.

Social worker and Resource Person, Haseena Batool, delivered a comprehensive presentation on the topic of violence against women during the event. She highlighted the role of the Special Cell for Women and discussed causes of violence including inequality, discrimination, societal biases, and power imbalances.

Batool briefed on various forms of violence, including physical, mental, and sexual abuse. She discussed the nature of violence faced by women and shared insights on the experiences reported by survivors. Other experts also spoke on domestic violence. 

During an interactive session, participants raised various suggestions and questions. Experts and resource persons patiently addressed the queries, fostering an engaging and informative discussion on domestic violence issues.

The participants appreciated the organizers for holding the workshop and requested to hold similar events in the future to continue to raise awareness and address domestic violence.
