Campus cleaning day at KU

Srinagar: As part of the series of the activities being organized by the University of Kashmir on the eve of the Earth Day 2013, the Vice-Chancellor KU Prof Talat Ahmad, today kick started the Campus Cleaning Day.
Dean Academic Affairs, Dean Research, Registrar, Deans of various faculties, heads of the Departments, faculty members, research scholars, and students of the varsity joined the cleaning drive.
The Vice-Chancellor led the team which also included volunteers from NSS, KU and visited various Departments and other premises within the campus for trash collection whereas the heads of the Departments led the cleaning drive in their respective Departments.
On the occasion, Prof. Talat Ahmad said that Earth Day is a perfect time to reflect about what we are doing to help protect the environment.
He said that the environmental protection is one of our top priorities and the academia should join hands with government and various segments of the civil society to ensure sustainable development of the earth’s resources for the prosperity of the all people and for our progeny.
While impressing upon the students to make sure the campus stays smoke and polythene free Prof Talat said “The main aim of this cleanup drive is to preserve the environment around us. We should ensure that our campus remains smoke free and polythene free.”
Prof. Zaffar A. Reshi, Registrar of the University emphasized on the need to make the campus the cleanest so that we can set an example for others to emulate.
“It is the duty of every human to preserve the natural habitats. We should make our campus and our homes as well as our surroundings beautiful and clean. We have organized cleanup drives before and in future more such initiatives are in the pipeline,” said Prof Reshi.
Prof. Shakil A Romshoo, Head Department of Earth Science who has been coordinating Earth Day celebration in the University said that by organizing various activities, Earth Day helps us to convey a deeper appreciation for all that Mother Nature has given us.
He said that every year, we renew our personal commitments to be good stewards of our Mother Earth.
Dean, Student’s Welfare, Prof. Nilofer Khan stressed on the need for volunteerism among the students and the youth for sustaining earth resources.
The University of Kashmir is organizing a series of debates, poster sessions, painting/debating competitions to create awareness about scientific, social and economic aspects of the Earth System this entire week culminating on 1stMay, 2013 with the valedictory and prize distributions at the Gandhi Bhavan.
