New Delhi, KMW News: The Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2011 was introduced in the Rajya Sabha today with Information and Broadcasting Minister saying that the Government has chartered a detailed roadmap for complete digitalisation of cable networks by December 2014.
Introducing the Bill, which has already been passed by the Lok Sabha, the Minister said,”we have chartered out a detailed roadmap for digitalisation to be completed by December, 2014. In the first phase, the digitalisation process will be completed in the four metros . Thereafter, cities with population of more than ten lakh will be covered. The digitalisation process will be completed by December 31, 2014.” The Minister said the Bill was aimed at establishing regulatory agencies to keep a check on content put out by unscrupulous elements.
The Bill seeks to amend the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995 which was enacted for the purpose of regulating the operations of cable television networks in the country so as to bring uniformity in their operations and avoid undesireable preogrammes from being made available to the viewers.
It has been considered necessary to carry out certain amendments in the Act for rectifying certain deficiencies noticed during the operation of the Act for the last 15 years.
