Srinagar: Stating that the killing of 111 persons during the present unrest has brought Kashmir back into focus at the International level, senior Hurriyat Conference (M) leader, Shabir Ahmad Shah Friday vowed to continue with efforts to unite pro-freedom groups.
“The sacrifices rendered by our people have again returned focus on Kashmir issue and there is great talk about it going on in world press at present,” Shah, who was placed under house arrest soon after he arrived at the airport, told reporters here.
“I had planned to pay obeisance at Hazratbal shrine for it has always been the centre of freedom struggle and wanted to pay tributes to the martyrs who gave given their blood to our resistance,” Shah said as per a KWM correspondent.
To question about the unity among the pro-freedom camp, Shabir Ahmad Shah said, “It remains our endeavor. I will continue with the efforts but the unification shouldn’t be for sake but it should unite hearts,” he said.
Shah, who heads the Democratic Freedom Party, said that in 2008, pro-freedom leadership was never against ‘result oriented dialogue’ and urged New Delhi to make atmosphere conducive for it.
“We are not against dialogue, but advocate a result oriented one for the resolution of Kashmir issue. It should not be for sake of dialogue,” he said.
“For any dialogue to be successful, New Delhi needs to create conducive atmosphere and accept Jammu and Kashmir as international dispute, revoke draconian laws and punish perpetrators of human rights including those involved in Machil fake encounter,” Shah said.
He said that India and Pakistan have already entered into many agreements on Kashmir including Tashkent, Shimla agreements, Lahore Declarations. “All these agreements were done taking in account that Kashmir is an international dispute and present leadership in India shouldn’t shy from this reality,” he said.
Shabir Ahmad Shah also reiterated appealed to United Nation president to facilitate in dialogue between the two neighbours to resolve the Kashmir issue “once and for all.”
“If US cannot mediate, he should at least facilitate Indo-Pak talks to find a solution to Kashmir dispute,” said Shah, also known as ‘prisoner of conscience’.
