New Delhi: Army Chief Gen V K Singh has declined to commit that he planned to move court on his date of birth issue which has generated a controversy.
Gen Singh, who had earlier indicated that there was no truth in reports that he planned to approach the court seeking redressal on the issue, in response to a query on keeping his option open on approaching the court to settle the dispute over his year of birth, yesterday said, “It is a purely personal matter and I desist from making any public comment on the issue.”
He, however, completely evaded answering the ‘age issue’ being a closed chapter now, saying, “I don’t know whether the chapter was open or has been closed. This is a personal issue and I will not comment on it.”
Talking to the media during a NCC camp visit, Gen Singh to another question whether his differences with the Ministry were over, said, “When there were no differences at any point of time, how can they be now?”
The Ministry of Defence has earlier rejected Gen Singh’s statutory complaint for not treating May 10, 1951 as his year of birth as against May 10, 1950.
Prior to that, the Ministry had twice rejected his claim of May 10, 1951 being his date of birth, that would give him an extension of nearly an year more in office.
As per Army records, the Army Chief has two sets of date of birth -while the Military Secretary’s branch record Gen Singh DoB as May 10, 1950, records with Adjutant General’s branch show it as May 10, 1951. (KMW News)
