2 killed, 12 injured in Shopian as forces open fire

Srinagar, Jan 27(KMW): Two civilians succumbed to injuries when forces opened fire on protesters in Ganowpora hamlet of Shopian district. A dozen others were injured, three of them critically.

According to reports, youths were protesting and started pelting stones when the forces started engaging them. Army responded by opening fire on them and injuring over a dozen youth of whom two couldn’t survive while they were being taken to District Hospital Pulwama for treatment. The deceased youth have been identified as Javed Ahmed Bhat, 20, and Suhail Ahmad, 18.

According to sources, four of the injured with head injuries were taken to hospital, of whom two succumbed to their injuries.

Death of the two youth was confirmed by Medical Superintendent District Hospital Pulwama, Dr Rashid Parra.
One of the critically injured youths identified as Rayees Ahmad Ganai, 21, shifted to Srinagar for specialized treatment.

Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Shopian also confirmed the death of two civilians.
Meanwhile, SSP Shopian Shriram Ambarkar said police have registered an FIR.
An army spokesman at 15 Corps Srinagar “we are ascertaining the details.”
