Kargil, June 5: Department of Forest, Ecology and Environment Ladakh, in collaboration with Govt. Degree College (GDC) Drass, organized World Environment Day under the theme “Land Restoration, Desertification and Drought Resilience.”
The event commenced with a ceremonial plantation by distinguished dignitaries at college campus, symbolizing the commitment to ecological preservation and restoration. This was followed by a heartfelt pledge ceremony held at the college, where participants vowed to protect and restore the environment.
The event began with a welcome speech by the Principal of GDC Drass, setting the tone for an impactful and educational day. He emphasized on the importance of preservation and protection of the environment for future generations.
Mohd Ali, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), graced the occasion as chief guest, while Raza Ali Abidi, Wildlife Warden Kargil was the guest of honour. Their presence underscored the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing environmental challenges. In his address, Abidi emphasized the importance of plantation and individual contributions to environmental sustainability.
The chief guest, Mohd Ali, delivered an extensive speech on the significance of creating an environmentally friendly atmosphere and the adverse effects of deforestation. He also threw light on the impact of global warming, urging immediate action to combat these environmental challenges.
The program also included insightful talks by three esteemed speakers, each bringing their expertise to the fore. Dr. Iqbal Ali, an ornithologist, shared his knowledge on bird species in Kargil and their importance in the ecosystem and captivated the audience with his discussion on bird photography and its role in conservation.
Niazul H Khan, a Brown Bear expert, discussed the types of bears and the importance of coexistence between bears and humans. Sajad Hussain, Assistant Professor of Environmental Science at GDC Drass, spoke on the purpose of World Environment Day, emphasizing the need for sustainable practices and awareness.
A video on biodiversity of Kargil was screened that provided attendees a visual understanding of the region’s rich natural heritage, emphasizing the need for its preservation.
A highlight of the day was the engagement of local students in creative activities. Students from various schools in Drass participated enthusiastically in a painting competition and a slogan writing competition, expressing their vision and commitment to environmental conservation.
The prizes for 1st and 2nd and 3rd positions were bagged by Mohd Rehan, Himabass Public School, Drass, Archo Elham GHSS, Bhimbat and Gulnaz Ara GHS, Thasgam in the painting competition.
In slogan competition Mustafa Ali of Himabass Public School, Drass, Ume-Lella GHSS, Bhimbat and Asif Hussain of Govt. High School Thasgam bagged 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions.
Later, the students took part in an awareness rally and proceeded towards the main market Drass to spread awareness about a clean and green environment.
The program concluded with a mega cleanliness drive at Minamarg, an initiative that engaged students from various schools in a spirited competition to collect garbage. This activity not only fostered teamwork but also emphasized the importance of maintaining a clean and healthy environment.
The school that demonstrated exceptional effort and teamwork was awarded the “Cleanliness Drive Heroes Award,” celebrating their dedication and hard work.
The successful celebration showcased the community’s dedication to fostering a sustainable future through education, action, and collaboration.
