Srinagar: A woman candidate contesting the Panchayat polls, was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in the central Kashmir district of Budgam, official sources said.
The woman, identified as Hassina, was contesting the elections as sarpanch in Pakherpora block.
They said the woman was killed by the gunmen near her house at Karpora Pakherpora.
Police have registered a case and launched a massive hunt to nab the killers.
This was the first political killing since the panchayat polls began.
First of the 16-phase elections was held on April 13.
The elections are being held after a decade in the state.
