Srinagar, Dec 23: The famed Kashmiri bakers, locally known as Kandur, have introduced a new rate list for 2024-25, doubling the prices of their staple roti products. The updated list shows that the price of a single roti now starts at Rs. 10, up from the previous Rs. 5 option.

Masses of Kashmir are stressed as the daily cost of roti, an important component of their diet, has effectively doubled. A family that previously spent Rs. 20-30 on roti in the morning now needs to allocate Rs. 40-60 for the same quantity.

In this regard, The All Kashmir Bread Makers and Bakers Union cites economic pressures, such as rising costs of ingredients and operations, as the reason for the price hike. However, people opine that such drastic increase directly impacts the affordability of basic food items, urging authorities to intervene.

Locals demand urgent action to address this issue, ensuring that essential commodities remain within reach for the average citizen. The impact of rising bread prices is a pressing concern, affecting not only local communities but also millions of people worldwide who depend on bread as a staple food.

The Far-Reaching Consequences of Rising Bread Prices are well known.
The recent increase in bread prices has sent shockwaves throughout communities worldwide. Low-income households, where bread is a primary source of nutrition, are particularly affected. As bread prices rise, these households must allocate a larger portion of their limited budget to purchase this essential item.

This can lead to a decrease in their overall standard of living, forcing them to make difficult choices between essential expenses like housing, healthcare, and education.

Economic and Social Ramifications of increasing bread price are known.
The effects of increased bread prices extend beyond individual households, with far-reaching economic and social implications. Small businesses, such as bakeries and cafes, may struggle to maintain profitability as ingredient costs rise. This can lead to job losses and decreased economic activity in local communities.

Furthermore, globally experts say the rising cost of bread can exacerbate social tensions, particularly in regions where food insecurity is already a concern. As bread prices continue to rise, it is essential for governments and policymakers to implement measures to mitigate the impact on vulnerable populations and ensure that this fundamental food staple remains accessible to all.
