Srinagar, Feb 16 (KMW): A top Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) Divisional Commander was on Sunday killed in an encounter with security forces in apple township of Sopore in north Kashmir district of Baramulla, official sources said.
They said Army and state police personnel launched a joint operation at Seelo, Sopore, in north Kashmir following a tip off about the presence of top HM militant identified as Divisional Commander of HM for North Kashmir, Mohammad Shafi Sheikh @Shafi Peer @Rashid of Zaloora Sopore.
However, when the security forces were moving towards a particular area, Sheikh opened fire. Security forces also retaliated and in the fierce encounter the top HM commander was killed.
According to sources, Sheikh has been active in the area for over 6 years.
