Islamabad: Dozens of supporters cheered the assassin of Governor Salmaan Taseer as he was produced in an anti-terrorism court in the Pakistani garrison city of Rawalpindi for a preliminary trial hearing.
Mumtaz Qadri, the 26-year-old police guard who gunned down Taseer in Islamabad on January 4 for criticising the controversial blasphemy law, was taken to Adiala Jail, where the proceedings are being held behind closed doors for security reasons.
Despite tight security arrangements put in place for Qadri’s court appearance, over 50 supporters gathered outside the jail, waving placards, singing religious songs and shouting slogans like “Allah is great”, “Long Live Qadri” and “We salute you Qadri”.
After police submitted a report on the case, the judge adjourned the hearing till February 1, when Qadri is likely to be formally indicted.
