Peshawar: Taliban militants blew up a school in the restive South Waziristan tribal region of northwest Pakistan today though there was no loss of life, an official said.
The large higher secondary school in Wana, which is run by the political administration of South Wazirisatan Agency, was razed when five bombs went off at noon.
The explosion was heard several kilometres away.
No group claimed responsibility for bombing the school. Tribal elders condemned the destruction of the school.
Assistant Political Agent Muhammad Shuaib said action has been taken against the Karmzkhel Wazir tribe under a British-era law that holds an entire tribe responsible for crimes committed in their area.
The tribe’s perks and privileges have been withdrawn after the bombing of the school, he said. The authorities have also stopped the salaries of tribesmen working in the Khasadar militia and various government departments, Shuaib said.
