Srinagar: Business and other activities were crippled today in south Kashmir town of Shopian due to spontaneous strike in protest against alleged eve teasing incident.
Official sources said the trouble started yesterday when a labourer allegedly passed on some remarks against a girl passing through the area in the town.
Local people later caught the labourer and thrashed him before he was taken into custody by police.
Security forces and police had a tough time in controlling the situation as people indulged in stone pelting in the town. However, the situation was brought under control.
This morning when some shops reopened, a group of people, mostly youths, forced them to close their establishments in the town, where additional security forces had been deployed to prevent any untoward incident.
Work in government offices, educational institutions and banks was affected due to strike.
However, situation elsewhere in the district was normal.
The demonstrators were demanding stern action against the labourer, from outside the state, involved in the incident.
A large number of security personnel had been deployed outside the building where a large number of non state subject labourers were staying.
