Srinagar, September 25: The stray dog menace has hit the length and breadth of the Kashmir valley especially different areas of Srinagar city and Sopore.
A delegation from Maisuma and Lalchowk lead by the senior members of Maisuma Behbood Committee visited the Kashmir Media Watch office and informed that menace of stray dogs more so in Maisuma area have made life of people hell and children are unable to leave their homes and even elder ones once the clock strikes 8 in the evening.
Pertinent to mention here that stray dogs cause noise pollution, feces garbage and traffic accidents. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that there are more than 200 million stray dogs worldwide and that every year, 55,000 people die from rabies.
The summer Capital of Srinagar and many district headquarters of Kashmir are facing this problem .
Few years back a count by the municipality found more than 90,000 stray dogs in Srinagar city. Dog bite cases over the year causing death and injury in Kashmir among humans has emerged as a very grim problem.
Few years back the unofficial estimates and local NGOs put the number of dogs in the valley at more than a million, triggering fears of increasing dog-man conflict in the next few years if the dog population is not checked.
In a heart rending incidents in past few years many precious lives were lost in the Kashmir due to dog bites.
Masses are urging the Srinagar Municipal Corporation to take the issue of dog menace head on and found concrete solutions to issue of stray dogs.
From Mausuma to Makhdoom Sahab , Safakadal to Soura the scores of areas of Srinagar are living under fear of killer stray dog menace .
Recently, 33-year-old man from Sangrampora area of Sopore, who was grievously injured in a canine attack 12 days ago succumbed at home few days back.
ChaplanKocha area of ZainaKadal in Shaher-e-Khaas have expressed concern over presence of large number of stray dogs in the area.
The realities call upon the authorities to immediately start massive dog sterilization on rapid scale .
