New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s agenda would be to push for more effective measures for global economic and financial recovery, UN reforms, Millennium Development Goals and anti-terror convention during his visit to the United Nations.
Dr Singh will be leaving for New York next week to participate in the High Level Segment of the 66th UN General Assembly Session.
The Prime Minister is leading a high-level delegation that includes External Affairs Minister SM Krishna, National Security Adviser Shivshankar Menon, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister TKA Nair.
The Prime Minister will be visiting New York from September 22 to 26. He will address the UN General Assembly on September 24.
The current UNGA Session has already commenced on September 13.
The Prime Minister is also likely to hold bilateral meetings with a number of visiting Heads of State and Government during his stay in New York, Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai told reporters today ahead of the visit.
He said the present UN General Assembly Session was taking place at a time of continuing global economic and financial uncertainties, with food and fuel prices at their peak, and the impact was being felt most severely by developing countries which are struggling to alleviate poverty and improve the living standards of its people.
”As a key emerging major economy, which is playing a constructive role in contributing to global economic recovery, we will reaffirm our commitment at the UN, to continue working with other countries and agencies, to further global economic and financial stability, as well as to foster strong, sustainable and balanced economic growth,” he said.
He said India’s priorities in the current session of the UNGA would include, continuing efforts for reform of the UN with a view to creating an equitable system that was reflective of contemporary realities.
”We along with the G-4 and other like-minded countries would continue to work proactively, to maintain the momentum for UN Security Council reforms,” he said.
