Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra has emphasised the need for close working of State Agriculture Production Department and farm universities to enable transfer of latest technologies among farmers here.
The Governor was interacting with a group of strawberry growers from Gasoo village, who called on him at Raj Bhavan here yesterday.
The Governor observed that there is a vast potential for growth of agriculture and the allied sectors in all the regions of the State.
This potential needs to be methodically tapped for enhancing economic activity and employment generation.
After discussions with the deputation of the strawberry growers, the Governor observed that there was need for action being taken to establish a cold chain, economically viable processing facilities and improved marketing facilities.
In the context of the excellent results achieved by the strawberry growers, the Governor said he would be discussing with the Vice-Chancellor of SKUAST-Kashmir the need of an early initiative being taken to formulate a pilot project, envisaging a Cooperative Society of the strawberry growers, which could set up the required facilities of a cold chamber and a processing unit to produce jams, juices and other products.
He also called upon the growers to cultivate mushrooms and other cash crops, which have a huge market potential.
