Srinagar: The 434-km Srinagar – Leh highway was thrown open for vehicular traffic today after remaining closed for two days due to avalanches. This was the second time that the highway had been closed since it was reopened early this month after remaining closed for six months due to snowfall.

Official sources told that all the vehicles stranded on both the sides of the Zojilla were cleared till last night. Vehilces from sides was also allowed today.
They said there was also a threat of more avalanches because of fresh rainfall in the area However, the snow clearance operations were started in early which enabled early reopening of the road, the officials said. “After hectic efforts by Border Roads Organization (BRO) pressed sophisticated machines and men into service to put through the road”, they said.
The snowfall at the Zojila Pass closes the arterial road for six months every year. The 434-kilometer long strategic highway, closed as per routine in November last year from Sonamarg onwards due to snowfall.
