Srinagar: Two-way traffic with light vehicles only was today resumed after more than a month on the 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu National highway, the only road linking the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country.
However, heavy vehicles traffic will remain one way till further improvement in the weather.
The Ladakh region remained cut off from the rest of the country though the Project BEACON has started snow clearance operation while dozens of villages, including those near the Line of Control (LoC) in north Kashmir, also remained cut off.
A traffic police spokesman said here today following improvement in the weather conditions it was decided to allow light vehicles from both sides on the highway.
He said hundreds of vehicles, mostly carrying passengers, left Jammu and Srinagar. He said the vehicles coming from Jammu have to cross Udhampur by 1230 hrs and those from Srinagar Qazigund before 1100 hrs.
He said to avoid any traffic jam on the highway, it has been decided to allow heavy vehicles from one side only.
Heavy vehicles from Srinagar were allowed to move towards Jammu. However, no heavy vehicle will be allowed from Jammu, he added.
However, official sources said there was still the threat of landslides and shooting stones at different places, particularly at Banihal, Shaitan Nallah, Ramsu, Ramban and Penthal.
They said because of intermittent rains the threat of landslides is there. They said the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has deployed men and machines at these places to meet any challenge. (KMW NEWS)
