Srinagar, Mar 10 (KMW): The national highway, connecting the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, was closed for traffic due to landslides and shooting stones at several places and fresh snowfall.
A traffic police official today said traffic was suspended due to landslides and shooting stones at Penthal and Batrey Cheshma on other sides of the Jawahar tunnel and fresh snowfall on this side.
He said vehicles, which left Jammu for Srinagar this morning have been stopped at several places on the highway.
It was raining with shooting stones, he said adding the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the highway has already been pressed into service along with men and sophisticated machine to clear the landslides. However, there was a threat of more landslides, affecting the road clearance operation.
He said traffic will be resumed only when a green signal is received from BRO and traffic police officials posted at different places on the highway.
However, there was no affect of snowfall on this side of the tunnel, he said.
