Srinagar: No vehicle was today allowed from Srinagar and Jammu as hundreds of vehicles remained stranded at different places on the 300-km-long highway, connecting the Valley with the rest of the country.

Official sources said about 50 vehicles, carrying tourists and other passengers and empty oil tankers, which left here for Jammu yesterday were stopped at different places because of slippery road conditions.

Similarly, the heavy vehicles with essentials for Srinagar, also remained stranded since Friday evening after the highway was closed due to heavy snowfall, they said.

However, light and passenger vehicles from Jammu were allowed on January 9 after the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the highway, cleared the snow and avalanches.

The authorities, deciding to allow only one-way traffic on the highway, allowed vehicles from here yesterday.

“We have decided to clear all stranded vehicles, including those carrying passengers, fruits and essentials at different places,” official sources said here today.

Decision to allow fresh traffic from Srinagar or Jammu will be taken only after getting reports from the officials posted on the highway late in the night or early tomorrow morning.

They further said people traveling on the highway must contact local Traffic Control Room or Police Control Room before undertaking the journey.

Roads to far flung and remote areas, including those near the Line of Control (LoC) also remained closed due to snowfall. (KMW News)
