Srinagar: To foil any militant attempt to smuggle in arms and ammunition in the summer capital, searches and frisking had been intensified by the security forces, who have been put on high alert in the Kashmir valley, where the separatists have called for a general strike tomorrow.

Sharp shooters will remain deployed on high rise buildings while a close watch will be maintained through Close Circuit Cameras (CCC) installed in Srinagar, where the main Republic Day (RD) function will be held at Bakshi Stadium tomorrow.

‘Though there is no particular information about militant threat to cause disturbances during RD tomorrow, but we have to make sure that arms and ammunition are not smuggled into the city,’ a security jawan said at Budshah Chowk near here.

He said, ‘We are conducting random searches of vehicles instead of stopping every vehicle which crosses the area.’ So far nothing was recovered, he said adding the searches will continue till late in the night and tomorrow morning also.

Official sources said there were reports that militants will try to sneak into the city along with arms and ammunition to disturb the RD functions or at least show their presence in the city which attracts more media attention.

They said militants were infiltrating into the city from outskirts and later moved to their hideouts after causing grenade blasts or target firing.

But, this time, a strict vigil is being maintained to foil any such attempt to smuggle in arms and ammunition into the city, they said adding that security forces, particularly field commanders have been asked to remain on high alert during the next 24 hours. (KMW News)
