Srinagar, August 13: A day after three militant attacks in south Kashmir, authorities on Wednesday beefed up security across the Kashmir region as Independence Day functions are just two days away.
On Monday late evening, militants ambushed a convoy of Border Security Force (BSF) personal on Srinagar-Jammu Highway at Pampore in which nine BSF personal including an Assistant Commander were injured.
The attack was reportedly claimed by Hizb-ul-Mujahideen militant outfit.
In another incident, a suspected militant decamped cop of Special Operation Group (SOG) with his service rifle at Tral in Pulwama district while a railway policeman was shot at by suspected militants at Malangpora in the district who later succumbed to his injuries.
Meanwhile, in the backdrop of these attacks and Independence Day functions on Friday, the security in north, south and central Kashmir was beefed up with government forces conducting checking of cars, bikes, buses and cabs. Besides, forces have also erected mobile bunkers and barricades at the entry and exit points of Srinagar city including at Pantha Chowk and Parimpora to thwart the entry of militants, a police official told.
The Bakshi Stadium in Srinagar, where Chief Minister Omar Abdullah would unfurl Tri Colour, has been sealed by police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). The sharpshooters would also be installed on the buildings around the stadium.
The security in District Headquarters has also been beefed up particularly at the venues of August 15 functions.
