Srinagar: The state authorities on Sunday imposed restrictions in city centre Lal Chowk and a few areas of old city to prevent mourners from taking out Muharram processions.
“Restrictions have been imposed in the areas falling under Maisuma Police Station and Kothibagh as precautionary measure,” senior police officer told.
He said restrictions were in place in a few areas o old city also.
Meanwhile, scores of mourners were wounded when police resorted to baton charge and teargas shelling near Jahangir Chowk and Maisuma to disperse a Muharram procession on Sunday, witnesses said.
They said mourners assembled at Jehangir Chowk this afternoon and foiled the restrictions imposed by the police. However, police and paramilitary CRPF men used force to quell them. Mourners offered stiff resistance and marched ahead. Later local youth at Maisuma joined the mourners at pelted stones on forces triggering clashes which were on when this report was filed.
